Phil Lesh & Friends February 9, 2001 This recording was made behind the Front of House Mix Position (ie. the soundboard) in the Denver Fillmore Auditorium. The recordist used Schoeps cmc-6 mk.41 (hyper-cardioid) microphones with Audio Magic X-Stream cables to Grace Design Lunatec V2 microphone pre-amp>Benchmark SONIC AD2K+ analog-to-digital converter. Like each of these recordings, the AD2K+ was used to send a 16-bit signal to a portable DAT recorder while the 24-bit signal was sent to a SONY VAIO C1VN Picturebook using the Digigram VX Pocket Soundcard. Sound Forge 5.0 was used to write the .wav file. Using SF 5.0 is the easiest as a listener can simply open the .wav file contained here. Otherwise, it may be necessary to use the "import" feature of another means of opening the files with other software. Please be sure to use software, and soundcard, and a digital-to-analog converter that supports 24-bit conversion. We have found it most interesting to listen to the 20 second segment that leads up to the 1 minute 15 second mark on this clip. It contains a couple cymbal shots, a chime, and concludes with the tom roll that are all notable when comparing the 16-bit version to the 24-bit. Next, the 25 second segment that begins the song, "Help on the Way," contains several items of interest. Please note the detail in the crowd sounds before the band begins playing, the decay on the guitar chords, the keyboard runs, and the depth and detail of the bass guitar right before the vocals start. While we are sure that each listener will find personally interesting sonic aspects, these have captured our attention. We look forward to your feedback.
