This was probably the most fun I have had recording in some time. After 14-years of recording live music, I have quickly gained interest in collecting all the wonderful sounds that occur around us each day. While I clearly expected dramatic differences when recordings full band audio (live concerts) in 24-bit as compared to 16-bit, I did not expect as much when recording what I originally thought of as "simple sounds." These recordings all come from a walk that started in our living room one evening and covers a range of several blocks of our neighborhood. While there is some clipping due to the extreme dynamic range, I have not eliminated even these samples since they still contain interesting information for analysis. WARNING: Great care should be taken when playing back this segment. The dynamic range could easily cause damage to speakers (and ears for that matter) if consideration is not given to the loudest points on this recording. The entire collection was made using a single DPA 4011 via the Lunatec V2 Pre-amp and Benchmark SONIC AD2K+ to DAT (16-bit) and VAIO (24-bit) simultaneously. The sounds are as follows: 1. The doorbell in our living room accompanied by one of our dogs. 2. The mailbox being slammed shut. 3. Our screen door closing. 4. A neighbor's dog accompanied by wind noise (rumble). 5. A STOP sign we banged our fist against. 6. A lighter and a relieved exhale from a nicotine enthusiast. 7. An approaching car. Each of these recordings proved to me just how valuable higher bit lengths could really affect any recording. Without editorializing too much, we have found these to be among the most dramatic representations of the difference between 16- and 24-bit recording.
