On Tuesday, October 9, 2001, the living world lost a man who embraced life to its fullest. Mike Remmers came to exemplify life to many of us as he lived it the way many wish they could. In late 1999, he decided to take some time off from the 9-5 lifestyle and make the most of life. He set out to travel the country, see Widespread Panic and other bands, as well as spending time with his family while offering us some part-time help around our office. As we lost of teenage daughter, his plans changed to a full-time dedication of love to us. His days with us became evenings, weekends, and so much more. As time allowed, he put the schedule together to have the fun he sought.
While we share many of the musical memories that so many of you know well, our days were made by Mike's arrival. When it seemed impossible to conjure up a smile, much less answer the phone, or step outside, Mike helped us transcend our stark reality in many ways. Sometimes just his coming in the room changed the mood and made the light shine in the window. We even found ourselves laughing when really we wanted to hide from the world.
It wasn't only our life that Mike influenced. It was his style. Years earlier, he helped another dear friend in need. While Mikey, "Tiny" as they said back then, had his passions, he never hesitated to sacrifice fun for those he loved. "He saved my life!" said his dear friend Ann. Mike helped her take care of her terminally ill husband just a couple years prior to his joining us here. Each night he drove 30 miles in each direction to help her attend to her husband's demands. On many a night, Mike would stay up and take card of John so Ann could simply get some rest. "My Mikey represents truth and loyalty. Most of All, Michael is to me a true expression of love.
Mike's cousin Phil described him as "At first, Mike was my favorite baby sitter, then my best friend, and he really became my hero. He lived his life as we all wish we could."
Now, we open our hearts, our homes, our memories to all of you. Thanks to each of you for sharing the kind words, the great photos, and the stories that will keep Mikey with us forever. We Love You Mikey!!!
